EU Competitiveness Compass - a new era for the European economy?

Share

At the end of January, the European Commission released a new roadmap to strengthen the European Union's competitiveness in the coming years. The document, called the Competitiveness Compass, is based on a detailed report by Mario Draghi - the former Italian prime minister and president of the European Central Bank. The report, which runs to more than 400 pages, indicates the directions that will shape the future of the Union's economy.

The Competitiveness Compass lists three key pillars on which the development of the European economy will be based. These are:

  • Innovation
  • Decarbonization
  • Security

Decarbonization - challenges and opportunities for transportation and energy

One of the main points of the report is the issue of decarbonization, which is fundamental to the future of industry in Europe. The Union's goal is to achieve climate neutrality in the automotive sector by 2035. Such a stipulation requires a technology-neutral approach that takes into account not only the development of electric vehicles, but also e-fuels. The European Commission has announced ambitious investment plans that will support the development of electric vehicle charging infrastructure and the production of renewable transportation fuels.

These investments are aimed not only at improving the availability of clean modes of transportation, but will also contribute to the development of new technologies that will reduce CO2 emissions throughout the transportation chain.

Recycling and the circular economy - the key to sustainable development

Another important issue addressed in the report is the development of a closed-loop economy, with a particular focus on materials remanufacturing. The European market for material remanufacturing is expected to reach €100 billion by 2030, which will have significant implications for both the environment and the economy. Such an endeavor will help reduce the need for new raw materials and reduce waste.

In addition, the projected growth of this industry will create about 500,000 new jobs, which will have a positive impact on the labor market in Europe. Increasing the efficiency of material remanufacturing will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as well as assist the economy in achieving sustainable growth. With these measures, Europe has the opportunity to become a global leader in promoting sustainable development and resource efficiency.

What can we expect in the future?

The changes that are coming represent a huge opportunity for the electromobility industry. Investments in charging infrastructure, the development of e-fuels and the rise of the closed-loop economy will have a key impact on the development of the transport and energy sector in Europe. These transformations will require cooperation and innovative approaches from companies and European institutions.

EV Solutions Expo - a meeting of electromobility leaders

We will be discussing these and many other issues on April 24-27, 2025 at the Poznan International Fair in Pavilion 8a!
