Electrification of road transport - challenges and opportunities for the future

Share

Europe is facing challenges related to greenhouse gas emissions, and road transport urgently needs transformation. In Poland, freight transport still relies mainly on internal combustion vehicles, and electromobility needs further development. What barriers are hindering transport electrification and how can we overcome them?

According to data published by the Central Statistical Office, in 2023 as much as 87.3% of goods in Poland were transported using road transport. At the same time, the European Parliament points out that road transport is responsible for around 70% of greenhouse gas emissions from transport in the European Union. This is a result that is cause for concern, especially in the context of the growing environmental impact of transportation.

How to change the current situation?

A key solution is the electrification of road transport, but in Poland this process is still at an early stage of development. Despite the European Union's ambitious goals of a 90% reduction in CO2 emissions of new heavy vehicles by 2040, only 83 electric trucks were registered in 2024.

The main challenges that transport entrepreneurs face are:

  • High vehicle purchase costs
  • Insufficient charging infrastructure
  • The need for further technological innovation, including increasing the range of vehicles*

What solutions will accelerate the development of electromobility in Poland?

Specific actions are needed to meet the challenges of transportation decarbonization. On April 24-27, 2025, the EV Solutions Expo event will bring together innovators from the electromobility sector. Participants in the event will have the opportunity to present breakthrough solutions that can significantly accelerate the electrification of road transportation, and thus contribute to the achievement of CO2 emission reduction targets.
